London - 16 February 2021 - A new survey into Pancake Day has found that 17,575,680 million pancakes are wasted in the UK on Pancake Day alone.
Commissioned by Too Good To Go, the anti-food waste company, the survey also found that one fifth of Brits are likely to have pancakes leftover on Pancake Day, with a quarter likely to have pancake batter unused.
According to the findings, half of Brits (46%) eat between 2 and 3 pancakes each Pancake Day. Over two thirds (37%) of those eaten are crepes, while over a quarter of those who enjoy pancakes on Shrove Tuesday prefer their pancakes American style.
When it comes to toppings, tradition holds out. Sugar and lemon takes the top spot in a chart of the nation’s favourite toppings, with 40% of the nation preferring it on Pancake Day. Coming in second at 21% are sweat spreads such as hazelnut spread or jams, followed by ice-cream (13%), fruit (13%), bacon and maple syrup (11%) and finally a more savoury option of ham and cheese with 5% of UK adults selecting it as their topping of choice.
A quarter of UK adults claim to have never had any pancake-related accidents, however, 22% of men have flipped a pancake and got it stuck on the ceiling while women are more likely than men to have had their pancakes stuck to the pan. This may be due to the fact that women are more likely to have pancakes on Pancake Day than men (52% compared to 42%).

If your household does have leftover pancakes, pop them in the freezer so that they can be enjoyed another time, or turn what was meant to be a sweet crepe into a savory galette for lunch the following day. Pancakes aren’t just for Shrove Tuesday after all! ”
