TOO GOOD TO GO BRINGS FOOD WASTE SOLUTION TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

New York, NY (March 4, 2021) – Too Good To Go, the world’s #1 app for fighting food waste, today announces its official launch in Washington, D.C., calling on everyone in the greater D.C. area to join the fight against food waste in an easy, fun and impactful way. Since the B Corp’s U.S. launch five short months ago, the app has already amassed over 400,000 users and over 1,100 partners in New York City, Boston, Jersey City and Philadelphia.

The Too Good to Go mobile app, available for iOS in the Apple store or Google Play for Android, connects grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries and cafes to customers, ensuring the delicious, surplus food from these eateries isn’t thrown away. Customers can browse participating locations, reserve and pay for a Surprise Bag on the app. Then, they can head to the store during the pick-up window, which is based on each location’s closing time. The contents of each Surprise Bag vary daily, giving stores the flexibility to adjust based on how much surplus there is at the end of each day. Additionally, each bag is priced at one-third the retail value. The app gives consumers a fun, easy way to live sustainably, store owners can profit from fresh food that would otherwise be tossed and everyone is helping the planet (food waste contributes to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions) - it's a win-win-win. In fact, picking up just one Surprise Bag is equivalent to the carbon footprint of charging one smartphone fully 422 times.

Fresh Baguette, Pearl’s Bagels, Chaia Tacos, Taim, Zeleno, Keren, Basebowl Ramen, Grindstone Creek at Stone Market and many more are among the first wave of D.C. establishments to join the food waste revolution. All participating locations can now be found as dots on the D.C. map in the app, and are ready for users to start reserving Surprise Bags today.

All three Fresh Baguette locations in Georgetown, Bethesda and Rockville will be available for eco-conscious app users to pick up Surprise Bags with a mix of fresh, delectable pastries, breads and savory goods. "We pride ourselves on crafting the highest quality French baked goods in the greater DC region,” said Florent de Felcourt, CEO of Fresh Baguette. “By partnering with Too Good To Go we are also responsible neighbors by limiting food waste as much as possible."

Meanwhile, Chaia Tacos will pack in surplus veggie tacos in their Surprise Bags. “When we first had the idea to start Chaia Tacos in 2013, we did not truly recognize the impact we would have on our customers and on the restaurant industry. We ourselves were simply looking for a way to eat more seasonal and local vegetables for our health and for the environment,” said Betinna Stern, owner of Chaia Tacos. “We knew that eating plants was healthy and we knew that eating local was important to support a better food system. What we did not realize was that we would become leaders in the fast casual restaurant space for our sourcing practices, minimal food waste, and female leadership. Sustainability is at the heart of Chaia’s menu. Our partnership with Too Good To Go is a no-brainer.”

The app has built strong momentum in its first four cities - folks in New York City, Boston, Jersey City and Philadelphia have already saved over 124,000 meals. Following the launch in D.C. today, Too Good To Go will launch in San Francisco, Seattle and Portland in May, with further plans to be in many of the largest U.S. cities by the end of 2021.

“We’re proud to have a presence in the U.S. Capitol,” said Lucie Basch, Too Good To Go co-founder. “Even though we started in Europe, Americans have already made a big impact through our app in a short amount of time. We hope everyone in D.C. joins us in fighting food waste, one delicious bite at a time.”

Already available in 15 international markets including Paris, London, Copenhagen, Madrid and Amsterdam, Too Good To Go has quickly become the go-to for conscious consumers and businesses around the world, resulting in more than 32 million app downloads and over 60 million meals saved to date.
