PRESS RELEASESTOO GOOD TO GO AND RETHINK FOOD PARTNER TO OFFER SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
New York, NY (October 26, 2020) - Too Good To Go, the app leading the global fight against food waste, today announces its partnership with Rethink Food, an organization whose mission is to create a sustainable and equitable food system for all Americans. By working together, the tech-for-good company and not-for-profit organization aim to reduce New York City’s astronomical amount of food waste -- approximately 1.3 million tons every year -- and ensure that surplus food in all five boroughs is repurposed for those facing food insecurity, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable community for all.
On the heels of Too Good To Go’s U.S. debut in New York City, app users now have the choice to make monetary donations to Rethink Food, which directly enables restaurants to make nutritious meals for New Yorkers impacted by food insecurity. The partnership brings together the efforts of two like-minded food rescue players to create a more sustainable and more nourished world. Through this new app feature, New Yorkers can take action against food insecurity and climate change as easily as: 1) Picking up a Surprise Bag (saving one meal is equivalent to the CO2e of fully charging a smartphone 422 times) and 2) Clicking “Donate” on the app’s homepage to support Rethink Food. This is an easy, tangible way for New Yorkers to make a difference during these uncertain times.
“Working with Rethink Food was a no-brainer,” said Gaeleen Quinn, Too Good To Go’s East Coast Director. “We have partnerships with hunger-fighting organizations in each of the 15 countries where we operate. The impact Rethink Food has already made in food-insecure communities is incredible, and we’re honored to support their mission.”
Since the app went live last month, New Yorkers have already saved over 3,000 meals with Too Good To Go, which is equivalent to the carbon footprint of four roundtrip flights between New York and Tokyo. Through their efforts, both Too Good To Go and Rethink Food play a crucial, complementary role in the city’s food rescue ecosystem, driving change on different levels of scale. Too Good To Go connects users with delicious surplus food from cafes, restaurants and grocery stores, while Rethink Food, through its Rethink Certified program, has invested $10M into independent restaurants, providing economic revitalization to neighborhoods and over 2 million meals for those facing food insecurity.
“Now’s the time to act. The current crisis has given us an opportunity to address the issues in our food system, and there is a collective urgency to create lasting systemic change,” says Rethink Food founder and CEO, Matt Jozwiak. “We are very excited to be partnering with TooGoodToGo and to get the support of New Yorkers to help us create a more sustainable and equitable food system. Donations made to Rethink through the TooGoodToGo app will be directly invested in the Rethink Certified program to support small businesses and feed communities impacted by food insecurity”.
ABOUT TOO GOOD TO GO
Too Good To Go, a certified B Corp, is a social impact company leading the food waste revolution to create a greener planet. Their app connects consumers to surplus food from local restaurants and grocery stores, such as pastries, fresh produce, sushi and more, which would otherwise be thrown away to make room for the next batch of goods. Each meal rescued equates to the CO2e emission of charging one smartphone fully 422 times. Founded in 2016, Too Good To Go has saved nearly 50 million meals across 15 countries, which adds up to 200 million pounds of food. Beyond the app, Too Good To Go has launched initiatives to change date labeling on food, produced free educational resources for schools and inspired households to change food waste behaviors. ABOUT RETHINK FOOD
Founded by Matt Jozwiak and co-founder Daniel Humm in 2017, Rethink Food is built on the fundamental idea that access to nutritious food is an essential human right. Rethink Food’s mission is to create a more sustainable and equitable food system in America by bridging the gap between the 70 billion tons of food that go to waste and the 42 million Americans facing food insecurity each year. To do this, the organization has developed a seamless process by which excess food from restaurants, hotels, corporate kitchens, and grocery stores including Trader Joe’s, Facebook, and Google is repurposed into nutritious meals for those in need and distributed through community-based organizations (CBOs) - both during times of crisis and every day. In April 2020, the organization debuted its Rethink Certified program with culinary partnership efforts led by co-founder, chef Daniel Humm. To date, Rethink Food has provided communities in need with more than 2 million meals. For more information: https://www.rethinkfood.org. Follow Rethink Food on: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter.
